Mid-Morning Briefing: General Kelly Fired Omarosa After She Caused a Scene Last Night

Here’s some political coverage unrelated to Alabama.

— Omarosa Manigault Newman is out at the White House, effective January 20th. I’m not exactly sure why this is a big deal, other than the fact that Omarosa had a recognizable name.

— Meanwhile, someone tried to frame Chuck Schumer with a sexual harassment allegation. Someone sent around a forged document from a former staffer of Schumer’s alleging lurid sexual harassment accusations. The only thing is: The staffer denies having anything to do with the document, and there were a number of accusations in the document that were easy to discredit (for instance, Schumer wasn’t even in the city on the dates three allegations were reported to have taken place). Both Schumer and the staffer have asked the Capitol Police to investigate and they plan to file charges if the culprit is apprehended.

Again, it’s important to believe women, but also important to do some fact checking. This document got into the hands of several media outlets, who spent much of the day questioning Schumer about them. That’s pretty fucked up.

— Speaking of Chuck Schumer, he and the Democrats are trying to pressure Mitch McConnell into seating Doug Jones before they vote on the GOP tax plan, as Harry Reid did for Scott Brown back in 2010 before voting on the ACA. I don’t know if it’s going to work. I mean, Mitch McConnell held up a Supreme Court nomination for a year, so it’s unlikely that he’s going to roll over here. Schumer is at least going to make it a thing, as well he should:

— Last night, the media reported on texts from a couple of FBI agents who were part of Bob Mueller’s probe. In those texts, the agents called Trump an “idiot,” which is just a fact, but the Republicans are arguing political bias.

“What an utter idiot,” one of the agents said. “God trump is a loathsome human….omg he’s an idiot,” another wrote.

OK, well, here’s the deal. 1) They also thought Bernie was an idiot. 2) One agent had already been removed from the investigation, and another had already finished her work on the investigation. 3) They’re not wrong, 4) most Republicans in Congress have called Trump worse; and 5) this:

The DOJ was conspiring basically to obstruct an investigation ahead of Rod Rosenstein’s testimony today. So that’s pretty messed up.

At any rate, it ain’t working:

— As expected, Lt. Gov. Tina Smith will replace Al Franken in the Senate. Unexpectedly, however, she will run in 2018 (the speculation before was that she would not).

— Oh, and this is semi-related to Roy Moore, but this is the best thing:
