Midday Briefing: Anthony Weiner, North Korea, and the Obamacare Repeal

It may not feel like it, but there’s more than the NFL going on today. For instance, did you know that we’re still on the brink of nuclear war? Because we are!

Upside: If we’re all dead, healthcare becomes a less pressing concern. Speaking of which, they rewrote the Graham-Cassidy bill with sweeteners to appeal to Maine, Alaska, and Arizona, but it still looks like a no-go: McCain is still out; Rand Paul flirted with the possibility of maybe thinking about supporting it if it were rewritten, but he’s changed his mind; Susan Collins is out, and Lisa Murkowksi still looks like a no.

In a radio interview this morning, Trump all but conceded that this attempt to repeal Obamacare will fail, too.

Trump gave the radio interview to a station in Alabama in an effort to promote Luther Strange, who is in a runoff with Ray Moore for Senate tomorrow. Strange is not doing great, and this ad — using Trump’s own words against Strange — is not helping.

Roy Moore, by the way, is an insane conservative who still believes that homosexuality should be criminalized. Trump — and some others, I guess — believe that Roy Moore might actually have some problems in the primary against a Democratic candidate, but this is Alabama. I can’t imagine a Democrat winning against an actual Nazi in Alabama, but I guess I’m rooting for the guy that Trump is opposing? It sure feels like a lose-lose situation.

— In other news, I love this:

— Trump announced another travel ban. This one is permanent.

— Finally, Anthony Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in jail this morning for exchanging lewd texts with a minor.

After the sentence was pronounced, and Judge Denise L. Cote of Federal District Court in Manhattan had left the courtroom, Mr. Weiner remained seated between his lawyers at the defense table, crying, his face in his hands.

“Crying, face in his hands,” also describes much of America on November 8th, thanks to the role of Weiner’s weiner in costing Hillary the election. I got no sympathy, bro.
