Meghan McCain Basically Says All Veterans Are Infallible Creatures Who Get a Free Pass from Her

What started out as a rational, informative discussion on The View about the absolutely horseshit right-wing attacks on Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman quickly descended into White Hell as Meghan McCain derailed the panel and tried to turn the panel into a referendum on Hillary Clinton. Why continue to inform daytime audiences about the growing number of government officials who witnessed Donald Trump’s attempt to rope Ukraine into meddling with the presidential election when you can shriek about THE TROOPS, a subsidiary of MY FATHER Industries?

You see, according to Meghan, if you’ve ever been a troop, then no one is allowed to question your patriotism or loyalty to America ever. Never mind that Mike Flynn is a veteran who’s going to jail for selling out his country. Or, oh I dunno, that time a veteran blew up an entire federal building because he felt America needed fewer blacks, more Jesus and a whole bunch of other stuff from the Republican platform. All of that means jackshit to Meghan. Via Raw Story:

“Hold on a second, just because somebody served does not ipso facto make them above reproach,” Behar said, and the audience applauded in agreement.

McCain, however, disagreed.

“For me, where I come from, it does,” she said. “I’m sorry, serving in Iraq in a war zone as a medic and what he did as well — by the way, his brother, Alexander Vindman, also serves, and both of them have Purple Hearts. I don’t understand, for me, yeah, you get a pass for a lot of reasons.”

“Automatically?” Behar said.

“If you’re putting your life on the line for freedom, the soldiers in this country and veterans get a pass from me,” McCain said.

To be clear, Meghan thought she was mounting a clever defense of Tulsi Gabbard, another troop whose loyalty should never be questioned despite a laundry list of reasons of why everyone should do exactly that. Instead, Meghan found herself bumping up against the one thing in the world she can’t handle: Being told “no.” Plus it didn’t help that Sunny Hostin brought up the existence of war criminals, which exploded Meghan’s entire argument like a van full of fertilizer. (Have I mentioned Timothy McVeigh was a troop yet?) Via Decider:

Goldberg attempted to calm the tensions by saying that they “really do want to hear from everybody, but we’re starting to do that thing.” McCain insisted that she doesn’t “know what that means, this thing,” and Goldberg, now at her wit’s end, began to sling it back. “It means you’re talking over each other,” said the longtime moderator, her tone ice cold.

“Well, it’s The View,” said McCain once she collected herself. “You know what? Let me tell you something about The View,” said Goldberg, prompting McCain to roll her eyes across the table. “This show has always had the ability to have different points of view, which we respect around the table. And when we talk to each other, we also exhibit respect. So, when I’m saying to you, ‘Hold up,’ because we’re not hearing each other, I’m not trying to cut you off. I’m trying to get you heard.”

Surprisingly, that didn’t keep McCain quiet. “I don’t think you’re trying to cut me off,” said McCain, adding that “the music” often tries to cut her off. “That’s what you’re doing right now!” fired back Goldberg. Exhausted, she threw the show to commercial.

A fair to question to ask is why do I spend so much time covering Meghan, and the answer is she honestly is what she claims to be: The Jell-O shot-powered embodiment of every piss-poor Republican argument. Granted, she doesn’t use those exact words, but Meghan’s entire deal is that she represents “everyday conservatives” despite the fact she’s the insanely wealthy daughter of a late United States senator whose last name has handed her everything including her current seat on The View. But she truly is a shining example of the Right’s best arguments, which should be terrifying to them if any of them had an ounce of self-awareness. If you’ve been following these columns with even the slightest bit of regularity, then you know Meghan has exactly two tactics that make her sound like a Facebook comments section in shoulder pads. Derail the discussion by bringing up an almost entirely unrelated topic that conveniently attacks the Left or straight-up throw a tantrum about how she’s always the victim. And if that sounds a lot like Trump, there’s a reason why he’s the head of the Republican Party. He’s their exact bullshit come to orange, rapey life.
