Do you remember that lunatic GOP Representative whose only qualifications are infidelity and trolling? What? Not that one. No, not that one either. No, that one’s male. Just — just stop guessing, you’re terrible at this. I’m referring to Marjorie Taylor Greene, henceforth known as MTG because I refuse to type that out each time. The freshman Representative best known for being an anti-trans, anti-Muslim, anti-science, conspiracy spouting gun nut is making headlines again. For most Reps, this might be because of their Congressional accomplishments, but since she doesn’t have any it’s because she’s back on her bullshit.
Yesterday afternoon, everyone’s least favorite troll thought it would be a good idea to follow Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez through the halls of Congress, shouting at her like a stalker off their meds. She accused AOC of supporting terrorists (i.e., Black Lives Matter), and Antifa, the Republican party’s favorite Boogeyman. AOC did the smart thing and kept going, because as anyone who’s been accosted on a city street can tell you, it’s always a mistake to engage with crazy.
“You don’t care about the American people. Why do you support terrorists and Antifa?” Greene shouted at Ocasio-Cortez, apparently with a complete lack of irony. MTG’s history of working with violent militia groups such as the Oathkeepers and Three Percenters is well established, as is her own history of posting threats on social media, including calls for the execution of AOC, Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and FBI agents. Apparently, there are limits to “Back the Blue.”
MTG was last in the news because she tried to start the openly white nationalist “America First Caucus” with Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar, so terrible an idea that even mealy-mouthed Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called it a “nativist dog whistle.” Once news got out, she backpedaled faster than a blitzed Tom Brady, claiming it was “an early planning proposal” and nothing more. It must be said that a number of Republican officials loathe MTG as much as the rest of us — not out of principles, but rather because they find her particular form of performance art distasteful and time-consuming.
It’s also worth reminding folks that this isn’t the first time MTG chased someone down like an outraged street preacher. In 2019 she followed Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg down the street shouting abuse at him, for daring to believe high school students shouldn’t face sudden death in exchange for public school education.
