Maine High Schooler Bullied by Students, Teacher for Wearing a Trump Cap

Bullying is bad. Even if it’s a kid wearing a Trump cap.

I guess.

In my very progressive neck of the woods here in Southern Maine, a sophomore in high school, Connor Mullen, was made fun of by two teachers and picked on by his fellow classmates for wearing a Donald Trump cap that read, “Make America Great Again.” In fact, one of his teachers remarked to Mullen, “Thank God you can’t vote,” while an education technician speaking about uninformed voters held up Mullen’s cap to illustrate the point. The class laughed.

Moreover, one female student pulled the cap off of Mullen’s head and threw it in the trash, while another told Mullen that he was “glad” that Mullen was being bullied.

After Mullen reported the incidents to the administration, the principal suggested that Mullen “might consider not wearing the hat,” while recognizing that it is protected free speech.

Overall, however, the kid is being pretty understanding about it, according to the Press Herald:

“I knew kids would pick on me about it, that’s just kids being kids, but when the adults started doing it I thought that’s problematic,” said Mullen, 16 and a sophomore. “This is a school that preaches equality.”

As much as I hate to say it, he’s not wrong. I mean, kids who are wearing Bernie hats in Alabama are probably also getting a ton of sh*t from their classmates, which is understandable because kids are kids. The teachers, however, probably ought to stay out of it, even if they disagree and they are right to disagree. I mean, this is a far cry from illegally proselytizing about faith, but kids ought to be able to express their political opinions without getting sh*t from their teachers, because God knows I got enough shit in high school for wearing my Clinton/Gore T-shirt every Monday/Wednesday/Friday for six months.

On the other hand, if you’re wearing a Trump cap in a Portland high school, you’re basically just trolling your classmates.
