Tuesday night, District 49 seat in Kentucky’s state House flipped from red to blue when a Democrat achieved a landslide victory over her Republican rival. This is big news because the area is considered a “Trump stronghold”. He won the district with 72% of the vote in 2016. Yet the Democrat contender won this special election with 68% of the vote. HuffPo notes this is the 37th state legislative seat gained by liberals since Trump won the presidency, marking this win as further proof that the president’s brand is souring even among his supposed base. And yet our favorite part of this story is the name of the woman who dealt this blow to Republicans.

Her name is Linda Belcher.

No. She’s no relation to Bob’s Burgers and does not appear to run a family restaurant with an emphasis on family. But nonetheless, we raise a glass to this Linda Belcher, who took on a deeply red state and won.

Kentucky’s Linda Bechler is a public school teacher turned state lawmaker, who had previously represented District 49 from 2009 to 2012, and 2014 to 2017. Then, she was narrowly defeated by Republican Dan Johnson. However, following allegations that Johnson had sexually assaulted a girl, he committed suicide, which prompted this special election where the Republicans ran his widow, Rebecca Johnson, as their contender.

In this grim situation, Belcher ran on the promise of “keeping funding for Bullitt County schools, supporting our working families, and bringing Bullitt County’s share of road and infrastructure funds to the district.” Her victory means she will serve the remainder of the current term, which ends in December. And presumably, it will give her a stronger position to run for re-election.

So, congrats, Linda Belcher.
