Let me start this piece off with the thought that we’re all having: John McCain has other kids?! It’s easy to forget considering only one of them made a career of screaming his name so loud that Joy Behar can still hear it to this day.

Anyway, after crapping all over Medal of Honor recipients, Donald Trump continued to shore up the military vote by desecrating the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery with a photo-op last week. To add insult to injury, a Trump campaign staffer reportedly had a physical altercation with a cemetery official. Instead of apologizing, Trump’s team decided to basically call the staffer crazy, prompting the U.S. Army to issue a rare statement — in the middle of a presidential election, no less — admonishing the melted-brain candidate.

Per usual, the media has been essentially letting this incident float by as Trump being Trump, but CNN has surprisingly ramped things up by conducting an interview with 1st Lt. Jimmy McCain. The son of the late Arizona senator was so dismayed by the Arlington incident that he’s now openly declaring his vote for Kamala Harris, which is notable considering the family’s deep Republican roots. Although, cracks have shown in their party devotion ever since Trump made pissing all over John McCain a sport:

The youngest son of the late Sen. John McCain had already been moving away from the Republican Party — just weeks ago, he changed his voter registration to Democrat and plans to vote for Kamala Harris in November, he told CNN in an exclusive interview this week.

But he is speaking out now for the first time about Trump because of the former president’s conduct at the hallowed ground where several generations of McCain’s family, including his grandfather and great grandfather, are buried.

“It just blows me away,” McCain, who has served in the military for 17 years, told CNN. “These men and women that are laying in the ground there have no choice” of whether to be a backdrop for a political campaign, he said.

“I just think that for anyone who’s done a lot of time in their uniform, they just understand that inherently — that it’s not about you there. It’s about these people who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of their country.”

Obviously, if you saw the byline to this article, then you know exactly where the conversation is heading: The woman whose trash I am not sifting through, Meghan McCain. Despite building an entire brand out of letting everyone know that she was shot out of John McCain, the only war hero in the entire world, Meghan has never wasted an opportunity to flaunt her family’s military heritage and squawk about how that makes her an authority on respecting the men and women of America’s armed services. — Except, of course, this summer.

Despite her Never Trump credentials, Meghan loves to play a little game where she conveniently goes out of her way to not damage the Republican ticket. Did she pipe up during the Medal of Honor fiasco? Sure didn’t. The recent Arlington Cemetery ordeal? Nope! For someone who Loves the Troop™ the hardest because — get ready for this bombshell — her father is John McCain, Meghan has had surprisingly little to say about two very significant slaps in the face to that demographic.

Instead, she’s made it a point to let everyone know how much she hates Tim Walz and Kamala Harris.

Of course I’m old enough to remember when Meghan stood on top of her father’s grave to promote her worst-selling book. (Although, for the record, John McCain is buried at the Naval Academy and not Arlington.) Strangely, that photo has disappeared from her Instagram. However, Meghan made the mistake of running to PEOPLE to promote her little publicity stunt, and the internet is forever:

EDIT: I ditched the embed to a rando pointing out that John McCain’s campaign released an ad during his first presidential run 1999 where he’s shown walking through Arlington to visit the graves of his father and grandfather. McCain is no saint, but unlike Trump, he apologized, immediately pulled the spot, and denounced the inclusion of the Arlington footage as a “very bad mistake,” according to the NYT. The spot is being widely spread by MAGAs — like the aforementioned rando — to attack Jimmy McCain for rightly speaking out against Trump. I’m not about to help them.
