Jimmy Kimmel Takes Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert to Task Over Molestations

It’s not getting as much attention as it should, but former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert — the “pious” man who led the charge to have President Bill Clinton impeached for his affair with Monica Lewinsky — was sentenced to a lousy 15-months of prison yesterday, after it was alleged that he molested at least five boys during his time as a wrestling coach. The prison sentence wasn’t even for the molestations, but for the bank fraud he committed by using hush money to silence a former victim who Hastert molested when the victim was 14 years old. The boy was molested in a hotel room during an out-of-town wrestling trip.

Though Hastert was only sentenced to 15-months for some unspeakable crimes, at least 60 people — including former House Whip Tom Delay — wrote letters to the judge asking for leniency. Leniency!

Kimmel took Hastert and Delay to task.

The reason why Hastert won’t face charges for the molestations, of course, is because the statute of limitations has expired, which continues to be a huge, horrible issue with the American legal system that too often protects the child molester. Three years, or five years, or even 10 years is not long enough of a statute of limitations for a crime perpetuated on children who are both reluctant to admit the wrongdoing and not yet old enough to understand. That shit stays locked in, suppressed, and the trauma and memory often doesn’t avail itself for years, and by that time, the worst scumbags in the world have managed to escape punishment.

Fifteen months is not long enough for Hastert. Fifteen years is not long enough. Dennis Hastert deserves nothing less than being buried under a jail cell.
