The Immediate Fallout from the Latest -- Yes, Within the Last 3 Hours -- Damning Trump Scandal

The latest: The NYTimes is reporting (and the Post confirms) that the day after Michael Flynn resigned, Donald Trump asked then FBI Director to end the Flynn investigation.

“I hope you can let this go,” he told Comey, according to a meticulously detailed two-page memo that Comey wrote as soon as the meeting ended.

It’s very rich in detail and hopefully it will come out soon,” the friend of Comey, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Politico. “There are other memos about his meetings too. He wrote down every word Trump said to him as soon as he could.”

And about those memos?

Trump reportedly also told Jeff Sessions and Mike Pence to leave the room before the discussion with Comey, where he also told Comey that reporters should be locked up in prison for publishing leaked information.

The White House, naturally, is flat-out denying the story, but no one in the White House is brave enough to sign the denial.

Congress is beginning to turn. A little.

Senator Angus King — my Senator — is finally using the word “Impeachment.”

My other Senator, Susan Collins, had turned on him even before the Comey memo came out. And unlike King (an Independent), Collins is a Republican.

Obstruction of justice is a good phrase to use, too.

In fact, “impeachment” and “obstruction of justice” should be the first word out of every Senator’s mouth until Donald Trump is booted from the White House.

Tammy Duckworth’s response, however, is my favorite, so far.

Meanwhile House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz — who is no longer up for re-election — is asking for the letter.

Chaffetz knows what’s up. Trump’s days are numbered.

Of course, Senate Intelligence Chairman Burr thinks the NYTimes should have to provide it.

Oh, NOW you stand up, Kinzinger?

This goes beyond just Trump, too. This goes to Sessions, who is as evil as Trump and competent.

Meanwhile, have you checked Fox News this afternoon?

They’re covering today’s Donald Trump news cycle in the best light imaginable, but even what is essentially state-sponsored coverage doesn’t reflect well on the President. But I’m sure they’ll get a Republican congressman on tonight to clear this all up for Trump.

Oh, well. Huh. Maybe they should ask Darrell Issa?

Oh wait! They got someone! They got … Karl Rove.

In the meantime, let’s just appreciate the irony that the man who prevented Hillary Clinton from being elected will probably also end up being the man who took down the Trump presidency. I know it all feels like this is going to go on forever, but the worm is starting to turn. I also know that many of you are skeptical of that. Many of you think that the spineless Republicans will never relent, and that we’re stuck in a neverending toxic news cycle. But this is not going to blow over. There was an inflection point in Watergate, too. Republicans defended him fiercely, right up until they didn’t anymore. In a matter of days, there was a sea change. I think we’re in the midst of that sea change now, and the additional Comey memos that will invariably come out should push Republicans over the edge.

See, e.g., this tweet from a GOP Congressman.

Anyway, this is not over, but for God’s sake, people, take a break. It’s been a rough couple of days. Go bingewatch Master of None. We’ll be here when you get back. I”ll let you know exactly what’s going on in the morning. You don’t need anymore of this in your life at the moment.

Meanwhile, take solace in this:

A senior official in the Trump administration, who previously worked on the president’s campaign, offered a candid and brief assessment of the fallout from that string of bad press: “I don’t see how Trump isn’t completely fucked.”
