It's Been a Wild 24 Hours

The last 24 hours have been insane. They kicked off yesterday morning with Donald Trump claiming that 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico were made up by Democrats in order to make him look bad (and Lou Dobbs joined him on Fox News last night, suggesting that Democrats use “science and statistics” to slander the President).

Later in the day, Senator Diane Feinstein referred a letter to the FBI related to possible sexual misconduct alleged against Brett Kavanaugh stemming from an incident when he was 17 — absolutely no details have been provided regarding the incident, and the accuser insisted that both her name and the details be left out of the press.

Soon thereafter, houses began exploding outside of Boston. There were 70 (SEVENTY) explosions, and it’s a bloody miracle that only one person has died (a chimney fell on his car while he was inside of the car), although 20 people have been injured. The exact cause is still unknown, but considering that the gas company had scheduled upgrades prior to the explosions, I am guessing that Columbia Gas is likely responsible.

Elsewhere, Paul Manafort is close to agreeing on a plea deal stemming from a second set of charges against him. It is unclear, however, if it will involve providing information to Mueller against the President. (Update: Manafort will enter a plea deal later today.)

Meanwhile, during this entire time, Hurricane Florence has been beating down on the East Coast, having just made landfall, although it has been downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane with about 90 mph winds. Over 400,000 people have lost power, so far.

Oh, and also, there was a primary in New York, where Andrew Cuomo handily beat Cynthia Nixon in the race for Governor. I was not that surprised by the result, but I was surprised to see that she got trounced in New York City while she performed best in and around the Albany area. However, Nixon ran a great race, raised a lot of necessary issues, did a lot of good, and I’d like to think put herself in a stronger position should she decide to run for office again.

Also, 27-year-old Julia Salazar won her race for state senate in NY, despite a number of accusations leveled against her in recent weeks, including that she lied about her background. There were even rumors of an affair with New York Mets’ Keith Hernandez and accusations of theft. Earlier this week, she was also outed (against her wishes) as a victim of sexual assault. She was allegedly assaulted by David Keyes, the spokesperson to foreign media for the Prime Minister of Israel, who has been accused by numerous women of sexual assault (he’s currently taking a leave of absence). Salazar, who does not face a Republican challenger, also becomes the first Democratic Socialists of America in the New York State Senate. Congratulations.

Meanwhile, Letitia James won the Democratic primary for Attorney General in New York, and unbelievably became the first black woman to win a major party statewide nomination, which is insane. It’s 2018. It’s New York. What the hell? James was Cuomo’s pick, and she’ll have a very important job nationwide because she’ll also be responsible for legally leading the resistance efforts against Trump in New York (she still has to defeat a Republican challenger, but in New York where Democrats outnumbers Republicans 2 to 1, it should be a cakewalk).

It’s also worth noting that six of eight Democratic state senators in New York, who regularly collaborated with Republicans, were wiped out in the primary last night, as the progressive wing of the Democratic party continues to surge in races across the nation.
