How Does George Conway Feel About Being Married to a Racist?

George Conway, the husband of the Chief Advisor to the President, wrote in The Washington Post yesterday:

Sunday left no doubt. Naivete, resentment and outright racism, roiled in a toxic mix, have given us a racist president. Trump could have used vile slurs, including the vilest of them all, and the intent and effect would have been no less clear. Telling four non-white members of Congress — American citizens all, three natural-born — to “go back” to the “countries” they “originally came from”? That’s racist to the core. It doesn’t matter what these representatives are for or against — and there’s plenty to criticize them for — it’s beyond the bounds of human decency. For anyone, not least a president.

This has long been obvious to most people, well before Sunday’s racist tweetstorm. But I wonder how George Conway feels about being married to a racist? Because that’s what Kellyanne Conway is. There can be no doubt about that, either. The President of the United States is a racist. He may not call himself a white nationalist, but that is exactly what he is. If you support President Donald Trump, you are a racist. If you enable Donald Trump through silence, you are a racist. If you vote for Donald Trump, you are voting for a white nationalist platform.

Some Donald Trump supporters will embrace this label. Many Donald Trump supporters will deny it and attempt to rationalize his racism as something that isn’t racism. It is. And by supporting it, you are supporting a racist, and supporting a racist makes you a racist.

Trump supporters do not deserve any sort of benefit of the doubt here. If you support Donald Trump, you are a racist. Full stop. You cannot hide your racism behind economic anxiety or tax cuts. If you are wealthier because of Donald Trump’s policies, you are being enriched by racism. Any benefits you might have accrued from this Administration owe a debt to his racist policies because those policies are what attracted him to the racists who voted for him.

If you support Trump, not only are you a racist, but the majority of this country will know you are a racist. During parent-teacher conferences, teachers will not think, “Oh, here comes Jordan’s Dad,” they will think, “Oh, here comes the racist.” At soccer games, one parent will whisper to the other parent, “That guy over there? He’s a Trump supporter.” “Oh, you mean, he’s a racist?” Your co-workers will know you are a racist, and your every interaction will be viewed through that prism. “Why didn’t he say hi to Dan when he came into the office this morning?” “Oh, it’s because he’s a racist.” If you wear a Trump hat to a ballgame, the people in that stadium will not think, “That man wants to make America great again,” they will think, “That man is a racist.” While you are standing in the check-out line at Kroger, the cashier will judge you, because you are a racist. But, you might say, “I can’t be a racist. I have many friends who are people of color.” Do you support Donald Trump? Then you are a racist.

There is no doubt. There is no wiggle room. You cannot take whatever good you think might accrue from a Trump presidency with the bad if the bad is racism, because that still makes you a racist. We don’t even see you as a “Trump supporter” anymore. We just see you as a “racist,” and whatever decent and loving qualities you might think you have beyond that are irrelevant, because all we see, and all we will ever see, is your racism, Racist.
