House Democrats Have Arrived at the 'Tipping Point'; Impeachment Seems 'Almost Inevitable'

After the events of the last few days, it’s starting to look more likely that the House Democrats will vote to impeach the President. The momentum is building, and it is building much quicker than many of us might have anticipated.

The turning point may have come yesterday when seven freshman Democrats — many of whom are from swing districts — called for the House to impeach the President if the allegations are true.

If these allegations are true, we believe these actions represent an impeachable offense. We do not arrive at this conclusion lightly, and we call on our colleagues in Congress to consider the use of all congressional authorities available to us, including the power of “inherent contempt” and impeachment hearings, to address these new allegations, find the truth and protect our national security.

We kind of know that they are true because President Trump, uh, admitted as much. On Twitter. To the press. To anyone who would listen. We also learned yesterday that the President ordered his (acting) Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney to hold up $400 million in aid to Ukraine days before Trump called the Ukrainian President. From The Washington Post:

President Trump told his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to hold back almost $400 million in military aid for Ukraine at least a week before a phone call in which Trump is said to have pressured the Ukrainian president to investigate the son of former vice president Joe Biden, according to three senior administration officials.

Officials at the Office of Management and Budget relayed Trump’s order to the State Department and the Pentagon during an interagency meeting in mid-July, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. They explained that the president had “concerns” and wanted to analyze whether the money needed to be spent.

Meanwhile, again according to the Post, Nancy Pelosi was feeling out the House Democrats and starting to reconsider her position.

She was making calls as late as Monday night, and many leadership aides who once thought Trump’s impeachment was unlikely now say they think it’s almost inevitable.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly.

It’s still too early to say if this snowball is gonna collect enough Democrats on its way down the hill, but this is Steve Doocy from Fox News. Steve Doocey. From Fox News.

I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist here. I’m not trying to get anyone’s hopes up. I’m still very cynical about this whole thing, and we all know that even if the House does initiate impeachment proceedings, there’s a roughly 80-90 percent chance that the Republicans will not convict him. And if they don’t convict, we will have to deal with a very pissed off Trump base, who is convinced that the media and Democrats are trying to steal the election away from him. I am 100 percent behind impeachment because ultimately it is the morally right thing to do. Is it the politically right thing to do? We may find out.
