We’re going to talk more about the bombs, Trump’s response, etc. later this morning, but for the purposes of this post, I’d just like to isolate this incredible moment in last night’s debate between Andrew Gillum and Ron DeSantis, the Democrat and Republican running for governor in the state of Florida.
Let me queue it up for you, here. DeSantis has a history of associations with racists folks and organizations. During the debate, the moderator asked him about those associations, and DeSantis lost his cool. From the Miami Herald:
“How the hell am I supposed to know every single statement somebody makes?” DeSantis said, drawing boos from a crowd in the most Democratic county in the state. “Here’s the deal. Let me just say this straight up. I’ve lived my life whether it’s athletics, military serving as a prosecutor. When I was down-range in Iraq we worked as a team regardless of race.”
By then, people were cheering.
“I am not going to bow down to the altar of political correctness. I am not going to let the media smear me like they like to do with so many people. I’m certainly not going to take anything from Andrew Gillum, who’s endorsed by the Dream Defenders, who say Israel is an apartheid state.”
And here is Gillum’s killer response:
Gillum: "Now, I'm not calling Mr. DeSantis a racist. I'm simply saying the racists believe he’s a racist." pic.twitter.com/BVHxKWalYL— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) October 25, 2018
Democrats should be using that line on every Trump Republican in the country.
Meanwhile, DeSantis remains laser focused for much of the debate on a Hamilton ticket Gillum reportedly received from an FBI agent, because that’s apparently all he’s got.
Polling shows Gillum ahead in the race.
One should not take anything for granted, however, especially in a place like Florida where the Secretary of State is Republican, had to be prevented by court order from purging voter rolls, and who also looks like racists believe he’s racist.
Oh, and in case you guys missed it, this is the ad that DeSantis used in the Republican primary.
Cool, cool, cool.
