In the grand scheme of things, this is not going to change things on Tuesday. But this story from Miami-based DJ Scott Melker, who attended the University of Pennsylvania with Donald Trump, Jr., actually for the first time ever makes me feel a little sorry for Donald Trump’s son.

Deadspin, which unearthed this, also adds some context in the form of other news reports over the years about Donald Trump, Jr.’s problems with alcohol. I don’t know if Melker’s tale is true or not — it certainly aligns with much of what we know about Donald Trump — but I do know that whatever one might think of Donald Trump, Jr., he is a product of both genetics and his environment, and growing up with Donald Trump clearly made him the mess that he is. Is that an excuse? Obviously not. But it helps to explain a lot.

I have mentioned this before, but on a Freakonomics podcast a few years ago, they reported on a study that basically said that if you’re a good person, your kid will probably grow up to be a good person. If you’re an asshole, your kid will probably grow up to be an asshole. One of the best predictors of that is how much a person tips the wait staff. If your Dad was a lousy tipper, you’ll probably grow up to be a lousy tipper, and there’s no bigger asshole on the planet than a lousy tipper.

Given what we know about Donald Trump and his affinity for stiffing contractors and even using family charity to pay the $7 registration fee for the Boy Scouts, it’s clear that Donald Trump is cheap and almost certainly stiffs his waitstaff, and therefore he is an asshole.

Donald Trump, Jr., never had a chance.
