Her Coward of a Boss Continues to Force Kellyanne Conway Into Making Laughable Statements of Defense

Meryl Streep gave a lovely speech last night at the Golden Globe Awards, and she took a moment in that speech to take issue with Donald Trump for making fun of a NYTimes reporter.

It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege and power and the capacity to fight back. It, it kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life. And this instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.

Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. OK, go on with that thing. OK, this brings me to the press. We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage.

As everyone on the planet expected, Donald Trump responded because he is incapable of not responding.

Honestly, I don’t care about Donald Trump’s tweets. They’re expected. The man has zero interest in governing; all he cares about is weakly defending himself. He’s one note, and I think people on both sides are going to be exhausted by that one note by March. It’s boring. It’s not leadership. He has no ideas. No intelligence. He won’t even go out and face the press, because he’s a goddamn coward. He’s a puppet, not just for Putin, but for Stephen Bannon and Kushner and Kellyanne Conway, who has to go on to television to talk to her boss because that’s the only time he will pay attention to her.

But Kellyanne Conway? She actually has some juice. Trump makes an ass of himself, and Kellyanne Conway goes out and provides Trump supporters across this nation with their talking points. They don’t have to be good talking points, or rational or sensical. She just has to give Fox News viewers something to cling to when even some of Trump’s biggest supporters are feeling like they got scammed.

Anyway, Chris Cuomo re-litigated the disabled reporter issue with Kellyanne Conway this morning, and she does what Kellyanne Conway does, which is to deflect and redirect. “What about the disabled kid that got beat up by four African Americans,” she said. Why wasn’t Meryl talking about that? It could’ve been anything really — she just needed some way to redirect. Cuomo didn’t take the bait. He stayed on the point. Conway got flustered.

She got so flustered that, by the end of the interview, she went with this line:

“Do you always want to go by what’s come out of [Trump’s] mouth rather than look at what’s in his heart?”

That is now the official stance of Trumpmerica: Who cares what Donny Trash says? Look into his heart! It’s that tiny morsel of detritus beneath the piles of lies, money and bigotry. That’s what really matters. His heart!

Conway, who is special counsel to the President-elect, also had this to say: “I’m concerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep is also, I think, inciting people’s worst instincts.”

Conway said that about Streep. That Streep was inciting people’s worst instincts by saying that “disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

Everyone can see right through this, except for the people who have no interest in seeing through it. And that’s what makes Conway so good at her job: There’s a contingent of America that just doesn’t care. All they want is a half-assed defense that will provide them comfort and mask their regret. Kellyanne Conway is Trump America’s security blanket. I loathe her, but she is great at her job, which is defending a coward who is not smart enough to defend himself.
