We now know the details of the sexual misconduct allegation leveled against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh thanks, naturally, to Ronan Farrow, who provides the details in the New Yorker.

According to the letter, during a high-school party, while Kavanaugh was attending Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland, he held down a woman, placed his hand over her mouth, and tried to force himself on her while he and a friend turned up the volume on some music to drown out her protests. The woman thankfully escaped, but she has had to seek psychological treatment because of the troubling memory.

Kavanaugh denies the allegation, while his friend from the party states that he has no recollection of the event.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has released a letter signed by 65 women who Kavanaugh didn’t try to rape in high school attesting to the veracity of his character. The fact that the Republicans had a letter at the ready — or were able to get 65 signatures in under 24 hours — suggests that they knew about the rape allegation, and rather than revealing it and dealing with the fallout, they chose to try to keep it hidden and deal with it only if it surfaced.

Whether or not the rape allegation will affect the confirmation vote, which is scheduled for next week, remains to be seen.

In other news, it is worth noting that Paul Manafort’s plea deal with Bob Mueller will involve cooperating with prosecutors in their case against Donald Trump, jeopardizing Manafort’s chances at receiving a presidential pardon.
