Good News/Bad News: Megyn Kelly Is Leaving Fox News

Megyn Kelly, the second most-watched news personality in all of cable, is said to be leaving Fox News. NBC managed to woo her away with a deal in which she will anchor a daytime news program, anchor a Sunday night news program, and take part in regular political coverage on the network.

Part of me feels like that’s good news, in that Fox News is losing one of its leading voices. Another part of me feels like Fox News just lost its one semi-reasonable voice, which means that Fox News will be led into the Trump presidency by lapdogs Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. It means that Fox News viewers won’t have anyone left to stand up to the Trump administration, which means Fox News will morph into something closer to Breitbart TV. That’s not great if you are rooting for someone to inject some objectivity into that echo chamber, although without Kelly, maybe Fox News loses some relevancy.

It also means that Megyn Kelly’s conservative viewpoint — often characterized by white feminism — will have a major voice on a broadcast network, where she could theoretically reach even more viewers. On the other hand, she is a conservative voice willing to stand up against Trump, and without pressure from her Fox News producers, maybe she becomes television news’ most notable critic of the administration.

Ultimately, what we need more than anything right now are a few conservative voices who willing to stand up to Trump. This is why Senators like John McCain, Susan Collins, Jeff Flake and even Rand Paul are so important. Much of the right doesn’t listen to the NYTimes or The Washington Post. Maybe they’ll listen to Megyn Kelly.

In other words: I think this is slightly more good than bad, and if Rupert Murdoch is pissed off about this, even better!
