This is actually an old story that existed closer to the fringes of campaign coverage back in 2016 that has resurfaced in the mainstream media in the wake of the #MeToo movement. There’s also presumably the confirmation that comes from a mainstream media report (in this case, the Wall Street Journal).

The story is that, in the months before the election, Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, arranged a six-figure payoff to Stephanie Clifford, better known as Stormy Daniels. The payoff was to keep her quiet about an affair that she and Trump had in 2006, the year that Barron Trump was born. Privately, Clifford told Wall Street Journal sources of their affair. She was going to appear on Good Morning America back in 2016 to talk about the affair, but took the payoff instead.

What does it mean? In the short term, nothing, really? A news story that might have dominated years of a previous President will likely come and go in one news cycle. It was a consensual affair, after all, even if Trump was married at the time. Trump cheating on his wives is not news to anyone.

Longer term, it’s just one more story to add to the pile that is the Trump Presidency. It will briefly distract folks from the “shithole” comments, but come Monday, we’ll still be talking about what a racist our President is, but fewer will be discussing his philandering.

The White House and Michael Cohen deny the encounter.
