Donald Trump Is Feeling Very Defensive This Morning About How Unbelievably Stupid He Is

There was a lot of drama on the Hill yesterday with the CBO score scuttling Mitch McConnell’s efforts to get a vote on the AHCA before the 4th of July recess, leaving the fate of the Obamacare repeal uncertain. McConnell failed in his first effort for a lot of reasons — healthcare is hard, y’all — but Trump deciding to call upon his SuperPac to attack the most vulnerable Republican Senator, Dean Heller, certainly didn’t help matters. I mean, come on: The path to victory here does not involve eating your own. In fact, McConnell called Reince Priebus to complain, and in a heated exchange, said that Trump’s move was “beyond stupid.” Trump eventually called his dogs off.

Yesterday, after McConnell pulled the bill, Donald Trump bused the Republican Senators over to have a talk with them about healthcare, and he said some weird things, like:

Hell of a cheerleader there, Donny.

After the meeting with Trump, Maine Senator Susan Collins said that she was “amazed and appalled” that any Republican PAC would run ads against Dean Heller, and then in the nicest, most Susan Collins way possible, she said that Donald Trump is a fucking idiot.

The meeting with Republican Senators clearly did not do anything to help Donald Trump’s self-described role as closer. In fact, according to one Senator in the meeting, Donald Trump didn’t even have a particularly firm grasp on what’s actually in the bill.

A senator who supports the bill left the meeting at the White House with a sense that the president did not have a grasp of some basic elements of the Senate plan — and seemed especially confused when a moderate Republican complained that opponents of the bill would cast it as a massive tax break for the wealthy, according to an aide who received a detailed readout of the exchange.

Mr. Trump said he planned to tackle tax reform later, ignoring the repeal’s tax implications, the staff member added.

Uh, dude. Either Trump didn’t understand that there was a huge $600 billion tax cut in the bill for the rich, or the man plans to enact another tax cut on top of that one, which would be even bigger political suicide than the AHCA.

Anyway, Twitter had a field day with that paragraph, and this morning, Trump is feeling defensive.

Hmm mmm. Sure, Donny. Totally engaged. That’s why the Senate has decided to work with Mike Pence instead of Trump.

Yet over the past few weeks, the Senate Republican leadership has made it known that it would much rather negotiate with Mr. Pence than a president whose candidacy many did not even take seriously during the 2016 primaries. And some of the White House’s efforts have clearly been counterproductive.

In other words, the Senate Republicans have no faith whatsoever in their President and would rather work with his number two, because he at least understands what the hell is going on. And while Trump continues to call the NYTimes failing, he’s clearly reading it, and this morning, he’s not happy about being characterized as a self-destructive dumbass.
