As is often the case when Donald Trump comes performs weakly, he’s predictably lashed out this morning like the temperamental manchild that he is, taking to Twitter and boasting about how well he’s done in online polls.

Drudge? Breitbart? Isn’t that a little like going to a Baptist church and polling the congregation on their favorite religion? I mean, the fact that 20 percent of Christians are saying that Buddhism won the debate last night should tell you all you need to know about his performance.
He’s even bragging about the fact that #TrumpWon is trending on Twitter right now.
The #1 trend on Twitter right now is #TrumpWon - thank you!

I don’t think that Donald Trump has looked at the #TrumpWon hashtag.
Trump just tweeted, "The #1 trend on Twitter right now is #TrumpWon - thank you!" Take a look! pic.twitter.com/AqgdlLiP5U

But here’s where he stepped in it again: During the debate last night, Clinton scored “bigly” with one of her final lines of the night:
“This is a man who has calling women pigs, slobs and dogs and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said that women don’t deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men.“And one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest — he loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them — and he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy,’ then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping’ because she was Latina,” Clinton continued. “Donald, she has a name. Her name is Alicia Machado. And she has become a US citizen and you can bet she is going to vote this November.”
It was a great line, reminding debate watchers of Donald Trump’s sexism but also creating some enthusiasm with Hillary Clinton’s base. She made Trump look like a misogynistic fool. And what does Trump do this morning on “Fox and Friends” to rebut the line.
He doubled down.

“She was the worst we ever had. She was a winner, and she gained a massive amount of weight, and we had a real problem. We had a real problem with her.”
Watch the faces of the “Fox and Friends” crew while he’s speaking. You can actually see their hearts fall into their stomachs.

And what about those coke sniffles? It was a bad microphone, of course.
“I had a problem with my mic that didn’t work, I wonder if it was set up on purpose. In the room they couldn’t hear me, not exactly great … I wonder if it was set up that way. I don’t want to believe in conspiracy theories. But it was crackling. To me, it was a bad problem.”
Don’t think for a second that he won’t rebound from this. He always does. He’ll find a way. Hillary supporters can breathe a sigh of relief this morning, but don’t get complacent. There are still five weeks to go, and at least 35 percent of the country are intractable Trump supporters, while the undecideds who will determine the election are clearly given to whim.
