Unless you know Nancy Pelosi, you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who likes David Zaslav. The Head Honcho at Warner Brothers Discovery shelved a Batgirl movie for tax breaks, shuttered Cartoon Network, and said the WGA strike would end because people love work more than supporting their families. He entered the streaming race like a show you don’t want to watch, interrupting the credits of something you like. He has so few supporters that you may wonder why anyone would strive to work for him.
Enter Chris Licht!
Licht was a former showrunner for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he shortened the opening credits, which arguably has one of the best opening themes in late-night. That alone should have been a red flag. Last year, he met with David Zaslav in Central Park and accepted the job as CNN’s new CEO. Zaslav told Licht that the job would be “brutal.” Licht ensured that it was.
During his time at CNN, Licht was responsible for the network embracing MAGA Republicans. It was an attempt to “both sides” the network that crescendoed with TFG getting a Town Hall on CNN to spread his lies, and anchors throwing hissy fits defending that decision. I had to listen to my Dad throw a similar hissy fit when I shamed him for watching the Town Hall. To be fair, I had fun shaming him for that.
Now, Licht is out of a job. Yesterday, at 7 AM, while New York City was engulfed in smoke, Zaslav walked Licht through Central Park and fired him. Licht’s tenure at CNN ended the way it began and, according to those closest to him, it was doomed to begin with. When you throw in with someone who has a “cut every corner” mentality, you should expect to maybe get cut yourself. If Chris Licht didn’t know that before, he knows it now.
