This Is Where We Are Now: Boris Johnson's Team Refuse To Say Whether Or Not He Supports Eugenics

Yup, welcome to 2020, everyone. This is where we are now as a society. It’s truly sunk this low. Well, maybe we were always at this depth and our respective privileges shielded us from the sh*t until now. Whatever the case, I’m still flabbergasted that I even have to write this.

Boris Johnson’s spokesman has refused to say whether the prime minister thinks black people have lower IQs or if he agrees with eugenics. Yes. That is a real thing in the U.K. right now. Rule Britannia, am I right?!

This came after it was revealed that one of Johnson’s key advisors, Andrew Sabisky, previously suggested ‘enforced contraception’ of working classes. He wrote on the website of Dominic Cummings, another key Johnson advisor, that ‘One way to get around the problems of unplanned pregnancies, creating a permanent underclass would be to legally enforce universal uptake of long-term contraception and the onset of puberty.’ He also said that black Americans had, on average, a lower IQ than white people, and that ‘I am always straight up in saying that women’s sport is more comparable to the Paralympics than it is to men’s.’

Johnson’s spokesman, when asked to comment on Sabisky, said, ‘The prime minister’s views are well-publicized and well documented’ no fewer than ten times. Spoiler alert: but that’s not a denial. So yeah, eugenics is back and it’s thriving at Number Ten Downing Street.

The worst part about this all is that I’m not surprised in the slightest. Boris Johnson has always been defined by his racism, misogyny, homophobia, classism, and the overwhelming entitlement he feels as a rich posh white man to rule over us all. He crafted this public persona as a bumbling P.G. Wodehouse protagonist, so it’s no real shock that he’s taking his medical and political cues from the era. The Tory Government’s policies on the poor and disabled have always been rooted in, to put it mildly, eugenics-adjacent rhetoric. It was only a matter of time before they went full white supremacy with their policies.

Make no mistake: This is racism, pure and simple. I’m sure the usual gaggle of right-leaning talking heads will claim this is overblown nonsense or PC culture gone mad or whatever 4Chan manifesto they’re quoting from these days. I’ve already seen some defend Sabisky and Cummings by invoking science. This is just thinking about a scientific approach to a major societal issue, they said, and science is free of bias. Of please, science is rooted in racism and sexism. It always has been. Eugenics is Exhibit A of that!

The Tories have been bellowing their bigotry from the rooftops for years now, but the full-throated embrace of white supremacy is, while unsurprising, still a shock to the system. I would love to say that Britain is better than this but wow, we’re really not.
