It is Monday, June 1st. It’s 82 days since Tom and Rita Day. Over 100,000 people have died of Coronavirus. Unemployment is up over 15 percent, as 40 million people are out of work. Protests have erupted around the country in response to the murder of George Floyd, and police continue to inflict violence upon protestors.
And yet, if you ever needed visible proof of the disparity between the haves and have nots in this country, look no further than the stock market, which continues to rise today, after two strong months in which the stock market rose 24 percent since its Coronavirus low. The Dow is back up over 25,000. People who can afford to invest in the stock market are doing just fine, y’all. They can collect dividends and watch America burn from the comforts of their second homes.
— The President, who spent much of the weekend in his bunker …
Never forget that when crisis gripped the nation, the response from Donald Trump was to turn off the White House lights and hide in the basement.— Bill Prady (@billprady) June 1, 2020
… as protests against police violence came to the doorsteps of the White House …
Pay attention to the white kid who puts her body in front of the Black kid, repeatedly. Take notes. https://t.co/OFY8C8vRNv— Dr. N. Kēhaulani Nahina Puʻulei (@kealaokalani) June 1, 2020
.. continues to receive his briefings from Brian Kilmeade and others on Fox News and tweeting.
lmao yes, donald trump is accurately quoting brian kilmeade here. "supremest" is in fact not a typo, it is a word brian invented. https://t.co/e76RPJsZzf— Bobby Lewis (@revrrlewis) June 1, 2020
I don’t know what this means, but I am guessing that the protests near the White House rattled the hell out of Trump.
Well, I just had a fascinating call with a former Secret Service official. pic.twitter.com/vQifEksEpj— Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) June 1, 2020
In a message to Governors, however, Trump wants to imprison protestors for ten years.
MORE: Trump tells governors: "You’ve got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again," per audio obtained by @CBSNews— Ed O'Keefe (@edokeefe) June 1, 2020
Trump is ranting (again) and Governors are alarmed:
Aides to governors say the president continues to talk. One describes it as a "rant." Says he keeps talking about the need to "dominate" the protests.— Robert Costa (@costareports) June 1, 2020
More: President Trump just berated governors and mayors for how they are handling the protests, calling them "fools," per person on the call.— Robert Costa (@costareports) June 1, 2020
He also continues to govern not with nation in mind, but his re-election prospects.
NOVEMBER 3RD.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 1, 2020
Speaking of November 3rd, the latest poll has Biden up by 10 points, which has the President looking for a silver lining:
“Trump” is leading in all swing states. Heavily biased Democrat Poll, just like 2016. Biggest “enthusiasm” lead ever! https://t.co/XIe2q6tGrg— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 1, 2020
The world is burning, and Trump is obsessed with his polling numbers. Meanwhile, while Trump is focused on his own base and goosing his turnout, is he also trying to goose Biden’s base? I’ll vote for anyone who is not Trump, but it’s tweets like these that might actually generate a tiny sliver of enthusiasm for Biden. And, as the Times correctly points out, it’s not enough to just not be Trump.
Sleepy Joe Biden’s people are so Radical Left that they are working to get the Anarchists out of jail, and probably more. Joe doesn’t know anything about it, he is clueless, but they will be the real power, not Joe. They will be calling the shots! Big tax increases for all, Plus!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 1, 2020
Speaking of Biden, you know who is doing a better job of campaigning against Trump than the former Vice President? I mean, besides everyone. The Lincoln Project, George Conway’s collection of Never Trumpers, who put out another fantastic ad:
This video from the @ProjectLincoln, a group of Conservatives and Republicans is brutal, honest, and scary. The close which challenges America says "It's time to choose, America or Trump." I remain hopeful that voters will choose America.— Fred Guttenberg (@fred_guttenberg) June 1, 2020
Also, it’s not Biden who is hiding in his basement.
Finally, today kicks off Pride month.
