An Open Letter to America
I’m sorry. This is heartbreaking and terrifying.
As I write this, it’s not quite over yet. Clinton will not concede tonight. Trump isn’t at 270 yet. But it’s looking ever closer that we’re going to be seeing four years of President Dumpsterfire, at least two with control of all three branches. And decades with his little fingerprints on the court. The damage will be vast. I’m sorry to women, minorities, the LGBTQ communities and the poor, among the other groups who are going to suffer because my ilk of old white men are thrashing against their looming irrelevancy. Your rights are about to take a brutal step backward.
Even if it doesn’t turn out that way, if my lingering hope takes root with these remaining steps, damage has still been done. The machine of the Democratic party has long been broken and now sits exposed. As does the misogynist, racist, deplorable underbelly of our nation. However this plays out, I don’t know what the way forward is. But know that some of us are still allies. You won’t have to do it alone.
We’ll figure it out together.
It’s going to be some painful steps backward before we can start moving ahead. Sadly, it will be more painful for you than for me. I only have words for now. When I finish drinking tonight, I’ll go to sleep having never been more disappointed in my country, my brothers and sisters, my democracy. But I’m going to wake up tomorrow and…well, probably drink some more. But after that, we all have some work to do. We’ll drink together and we’ll fight together and we’ll get there. Together.
Be safe. Stay strong. There is still hope and love in this country. We’re just going to have to work hard to hold onto it and use it.
