23 Comedians Burn Their Election Material For A Cause

Presidential elections happen every four years, and comedians who focus on topical material often find themselves unsure what to do with all of that material cultivated over the last several months (or almost two years as the case seems to increasingly be.) You can either hang on to it, stretching all limits of how to make it feel topical while it gets incrementally harder and harder, not to mention sadder and sadder, to pull blood from that particular stone, or you can just chuck it all and walk away from it, seeing months of writing work fade away never to be heard from again.

For this election though, LA comedian and co-host of the popular Lady to Lady Podcast Brandie Posey had a different idea.

“I was on tour a few weeks ago & as I was watching my openers every night, it hit me how much material about this election has been generated out of how toxic it’s gotten. And as soon as the election is over, all those jokes are unusable, so I thought we might as well make them mean something!” Posey says, “I was thinking that it’d be hella cathartic to record all of it into an album & then donate the proceeds to a charity that Donald Trump would fucking hate.”

On Tuesday 11/2, immediately following the Cubs’ victory game, 23 comedians including Posey performed their election jokes for a house party crowd, which was then edited together into Burn This Election, a time capsule comedy album that allowed the comics to blow off some steam and laugh through their stress about the impending apocalypse together.

“Everyone involved had been a dream - everyone volunteered their time, from the comics to the guys who live in the house we recorded in, to the cover art, to my friends Tony [Thaxton of Motion City Soundtrack fame] & Kailynn [West of Tiny Stills] who recorded and mixed it! We turned the whole thing around in under 2 weeks from the night I thought of it, which is crazy for an album,” says Posey.

Burn This Election is available for pre-order now on Bandcamp and will be released tomorrow on Election Day. All proceeds from the album will go to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization.
