The Best Political Podcast Around Gets a New Name, New Company

Like many of you, I suspect, I turned to the political podcast, Keepin’ it 1600 for comfort during the election. In fact, in the three weeks before the election, I listened to 1600 to the exclusion of everything else. Turns out, that comfort was illusory, and the bed-wetters had every reason to soil their sheets.

The podcast — from hosts and former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor (plus former Obama communications director Dan Pfeiffer) — will no longer be called Keepin It 1600, and it will no longer be a part of Bill Simmons’ The Ringer network. Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Vietor have struck out on their own and created their own new podcast network, Crooked Media, which launches today with their new podcast, Pod Save America.

It will no longer be a hobby podcast. The guys are planning to make it their jobs, and hope to have several more podcasts in the network designed to counter the Trump administration.

From The Daily Beast:

“If Hillary Clinton had won the election, like we all wrongly prognosticated, I think all of us would have been content to keep doing this as a hobby,” Vietor, who served as a spokesperson for Obama, adds. “But that night changed things for a lot of people, us included. I woke up feeling like sitting on the sidelines wasn’t an option anymore. I wanted to be part of whatever is going to happen over the next four years to preserve the things we fought for at the White House.”

As much as anything, the podcast is designed to help salvage the very Obama policies that they helped to enact. Favreau calls it the media equivalent of Obama’s new foundation, which Favreau has helped to establish. They also hope to ” “pierce the bubble” that separates left from right in America by engaging in casual, long-form conversations in a podcast setting.” They can do so by having guys like Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander — who ran and almost won a Senate seat despite long odds — on the podcast more often. His appearance on Keepin’ it 1600 basically won my vote for life.

Hopefully, they can also keep ahead of the news cycle a bit. Those poor guys: Their podcasts were often rendered irrelevant minutes after they aired, thanks to the fast-moving news cycle during the election.

Meanwhile, our readers can start lobbying for their respective teams for next year’s Pajiba 10.
