Garry Marshall had a long, rich and varied career. Television, film, and almost single-handedly igniting the careers of our biggest stars. We have a lot to thank him for, that wonderful man. I could do a list of my favorite Garry TV shows, or rank his rom-coms, or even do an extensive list of his acting roles (my favorite is always going to be Soapdish). But instead, let’s celebrate the best Garry Marshall-adjacent delight of them all—the long-running relationship between Marshall and Community star Gillian Jacobs on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast.
“Garry Marshall” (as portrayed by Paul F. Tompkins) first appeared on Comedy Bang Bang back in 2010. He created all the classic sitcoms we know and love, only he’s also an alien and/or from another dimension and also hunts monsters. He would appear several times before his life changed forever in late 2012, when he met his bride-to-be, Gillian Jacobs.
Gillian Jacobs, in this scenario, is a pretty murderous gold digger. That’s a pretty important part of the story.
Over the course of six podcast episodes, the two would fall in love, get married, break up, kill Garry’s wife, put her in suspended animation, take her out of suspended animation, have a baby, find out the baby was just a doll the whole time, get engaged, almost get married, have their wedding interrupted by Alan Thicke, and then some other stuff. It’s complicated. Like love.
If you’re confused, and I can’t imagine why, here’s just a taste of their beautiful relationship courtesy of their wedding vows as they are (nearly) married by the Reverend Robert Parsimony (also Paul F. Tompkins—he usually has about three characters in these episodes).
You can watch one full episode with video here, and meet their beautiful baby (Gillian enters at 25:00).
I can’t encourage you all enough to listen to this whole series. It’s just my favorite running bit on the show. Here are the episodes you should download:
180: Friends Without Words
199: Garry Unmarried
222: A Peanut in the Rain
272: Sex Party Season
335: The Wedding of Gilli and Garry
401: LOVE Is Thicker Than Water
For all his contributions to entertainment and pop culture as we know it today, thank you most Garry Marshall for one dumb thing that entertains me so, so much, even if you had nothing to do with it. And PFT will always have this.
And, please, call him Garry.
