Podcasters of Sex S2E6: Julianne Nicholson Should Be in Everything

As much as the Bill-Virginia dynamic on Masters of Sex is fascinating, it’s Virginia’s relationship with Lillian that has proven to be the most powerful relationship of the series. Watching these two strong-willed women, each used to putting up emotional walls as defense mechanisms, come to care for each other — to be friends, in the full, deep sense of that type of bond — has been gratifying. Theirs is one of the best depictions of female friendship on TV, and if Julianne Nicholson didn’t just earn herself an Emmy nomination, then I don’t know why the Emmys exist at all. Spectacular.

My Podcasters of Sex co-host Mallory Andrews, Submissions Editor for cléo, returns this week to talk about Virginia and Lillian as well as Virginia and Bill in Season Two episode six, “Blackbird.” We discuss viewer feedback left regarding last week’s episode and whether or not there’s love between Masters and Johnson — We still say yes — as well as the powerful storylines tackling racism and stereotypes. Is this the last we’ll see of Courtney B. Vance? If so, then that is certainly a weird game the series is playing by bringing in great guest actors (Danny Huston, Betsy Brandt) and only keeping them around for a few episodes. At least Vance made his role, however small, memorable.
