According to Hollywood legend, Mel Gibson saved Robert Downey Jr.’s career by casting him in 2003’s The Singing Detective despite the fact that no one would insure him. The film was an absolute flop, but Downey went on to star in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang for Shane Black before landing a role in a little film called Iron Man. Now, one could argue that Jon Favreau refusing to back down from casting Downey was the biggest moment of his career. Shit, Christopher Nolan thinks it’s the most historic casting decision in Hollywood history. But ever the loyal friend, Downey has continued to credit Gibson for his good fortune and considers him a guru. Let’s give Downey the benefit of the doubt that he stuck by Mel after the infamous “sugar tits” DUI arrest when he said Jews cause all of the wars. In theory, Gibson apologized, but he mostly just called the whole thing “unfortunate” before frothing at the mouth about the cop who recorded him. So for the sake of argument, let’s be wildly generous and chalk that up to the booze. But it wasn’t Mel’s only scandal. Gibson was later slapped with domestic violence charges and pled no contest to assaulting his Russian girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva while she was allegedly holding their infant child. He was also infamously recorded saying she was going to be raped by a pack of n-words. Following that ordeal, Downey continued to back his “savior” by joking that Gibson should direct Iron Man 4 because it would be “bananas.” Since then, there’s been a continued raft of attention on Gibson’s controversial views and violent outbursts, and Downey has been quiet about his love for all things Mel — until last night. While collecting his SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor, RDJ thanked Mel Gibson and people definitely noticed. This one did not slip under the radar. (Daily Beast)
