New Photos From The Hobbit Prove It's Not Too Late To Vote A Dwarf Into Your Pajiba 10

Happy Fireworks Eve to all my favorite American Citizens! To you Canadistanis, you already had National Poutine Day or whatever so get off my expensively manicured lawn. For a more scientific enjoyment of your July 4th, here’s a breakdown of which chemicals produce the colors you see in a fireworks show. So, this year, unimpress your date by cooing “ooooooooohhh, Soooodium Chloriiiide.” (Boing Boing)

Speaking of patriotism, is anything more G-D American than this sentence? “Not long after allowing his pubic hair to be shaved into the shape of a eagle for GQ’s July issue…” That’s the lead in to this Nick Offerman (aka Ron Swanson aka Duke Silver) interview. It’s fan-bleeping-tastic. Excuse me while I go hand-hew a canoe out of an oak tree. (GQ)

You know, Marvel, just when I thought the new Spider-Man had me burned out, you pull me back in with Lizzy Caplan. Both she and [email protected] alum Jesse Bradford (seriously, why is that not always the first thing people note on his CV?) will be starring in an Avengers adjacent short that will appear, one presumes, on the DVD release. Caplan, by the way, is one of my Pajiba 10 alternates. (/Film)

Speaking of the Underwhelming Spider-Man, NPR’s Linda Holmes has an interesting article on how this new Peter Parker is much more of a geek than a nerd. And yes, she claims, the difference matters. (NPR)

For all you geeks and nerds, here’s a series of famous photographs re-enacted with Star Wars action figures. It’s better than it has any right to be. (365 Days Of Clones)

Speaking of 80s sci-fi memorabilia, have you all seen the original ET finger toy? It’s, um, frankly it’s lewd. (io9)

Also lewd (in, one hopes, a more intentional way) is this Magic Mike action figure. Ladies and gay/bi-curious dudes, what you do with your very own bendable Charming Potato is your business. (Toy Cutter)

I promise you that, eventually, we’ll stop talking about Magic Mike, but if you’ve seen it, you know that the cheesy-*ss dance scenes/skits were the best part of the film. Please take a moment and read this piece by the film’s choreographer that breaks down each one and details the, er, hands-on involvement of the actors. (EW)

Not to be outdone by Magic Mike Peter Jackson is bringing sexy back to Middle-earth. I mean, all due respect to John Rhys-Davies, but Aidan Turner and Richard Armitage are turning it up to 11. Here are some new photos of them, Gandalf, hobbits and elves, oh my. (Screen Rant)

And now for something completely different, The Independent attempts to class the five types of bad mothering. Look deep into your wounded psyche, where does your mum fit in? (The Independent)

This is not a joke. I repeat, this is not a joke. R. Kelly blames his divorce on The Notebook. (FilmDrunk)

Here’s the cover of JK Rowling’s first adult novel, “The Casual Vacancy.” Guys, this book is locked down TIGHT, I can’t get any good info on it. (Gawker)

Everyone knows that you can send a coconut in the mail just by writing the address on its hull and slapping a stamp or ten on it. But did you know that, back in the day, you could send game through the Royal Mail? Game as in animals that have been hunted. But that’s not the best part. Click here to read the caveat. (Neatorama)

IFC gives us 10 reasons to love Paul Rudd. Please, I’m pretty sure we just needed the one. (IFC)

Kate Beckinsale, who I quite like, gives a lovely and mature interview about body image and aging in Hollywood. All of which I find a *little* hard to swallow given the great Orange-ing/teeth veneering of ‘01. (Celebitchy)

Finally, speaking of pearly whites, here’s a fantastic poster for one of my favorite films of 2011, Attack The Block. (FYMP)

Finally, barring Attack The Block, Cabin In the Woods and a few others, this supercut proves that most of what Hollywood has to offer us is a retread. But, then again, you already knew that.
