The Overlords Discuss Moderation of Entertainment Consumption--Or Lack Thereof

Jodi: What movies do you love but avoid watching too often so that some parts seem new and also so you don’t tire of them? The Dark Knight, Shaun of the Dead, Deadpool, Sinister are some of mine.

Dustin: Eternal Sunshine. Still only watched once. May wait until I’m super old to watch again.

Seth: Yeah, Dark Knight, definitely. Dangerous Liasons. Grosse Point Blank. Children of Men, big time. Eternal Sunshine as well, D. The Game (no joke).

Kristy: Oh. I don’t tire of rewatching movies. I’ve seen ones I don’t even like much four or five times.

Seth: Oh. Last Action Hero! Actually I’m kidding on that one. My love for that will never tire…

Jodi: 10 Things I Hate About You is one I’m waiting to watch again. Because sad.

Kristy: Do you mean movies you fear won’t age well? I’m not sure I understand.

Jodi: Maybe it’s just me, but I’ll watch something and be obsessed with it constantly until I can’t stand it anymore. Since I know I’m like that, movies that I truly love don’t get put into my viewing rotation much for fear I’ll tire of them. I won’t, but that’s my fear. Yet I’ll watch MST3K episodes on a constant loop with no fear. My brain is a—well, it’s a place.

Kristy: Oh, that’s interesting! I do that with songs. Like Hamilton and Moana’s soundtracks, I force myself to take a break so I wouldn’t get sick of them. Movies don’t work that way for me.

Victoria: I do that but with songs and 30 minute TV comedies. I’ve probably watched 30 Rock approximately 30 times the whole way through. For me the moderation isn’t like a conscious process though? I’ll listen to the Moana soundtrack on repeat until one day i just don’t feel like it anymore, for example. It’s not like i go “okay time to take a break” in my head.

Bekka: Jurassic Park because the visual effects are astounding. I saw the movie when I was 10 in the theater and it’s the closest I’ll feel to watching Jaws for the first time with a movie for my generation. I love both with my heart and soul, but I can’t over-watch them for fear whatever magic will wane. I also feel the same way with Independence Day (the CGI has not held up well at all) and the Star Wars trilogy, but not nearly as much with them as Jaws and JP. Lastly, Fried Green Tomatoes and the Green Mile. Those movies I watch to feel feelings and watching them too often numbs you out in a way?

Dustin:I strictly only rewatch movies with someone else who hasn’t seen them (my kids or Molly). Otherwise, I cannot think of a movie since Rocket Science that I have willingly rewatched.

Seth: Yeah yeah Dustin. You have a wonderful memory and can relive movies in your memory palace and aren’t you friggin special.

Dustin: I have a very special memory palace.

Steven: Field of Dreams. Every year, the week spring training opens.

Kristy: For me music, I can loop and loop and loop, and then it’s like I broke it. All of a sudden I go from “That’s my JAM!” to “UGH, skip.” Because I’ve recognized this idiosyncrasy, I now limit myself. When it hits the point that I realize I’m not really listening to the song in my headphones anymore, it’s time to swap out of “Hamilton” for “Moana” or “Lemonade.” And repeat. And repeat. And repeat.

Rebecca: I’m like Kristy with songs - I’ll listen on repeat over and over and over until one day I’m done with it, and then a few months/years later some switch will flip in my head and I’ll revisit.

Kurt I don’t rewatch movies nearly as often as I once did, and television not at all. However, I’ll listen to the same songs and reread books over and over. I rarely get sick of either.

Brian: Halloween and Die Hard. And also Goodfellas.

Seth: Man, i can watch Die Hard forEVER and not tire of it. not even a little bit

Petr: Heat is my favourite movie of all fucking time. I think it’s basically perfect. I watch it once a year, only, on a quiet day when I unplug everything, pour myself a nice scotch, and pop the blu ray on. I’m sure I would still enjoy it if I watched it once a week but THAT’S NOT THE WAY IT’S DONE.

Seth: I mean, when a man is right, a man is right. Even if that man is a dirty, no good communist.
