If you have a weak stomach look away now.
In what is one of the most horrifying and stomach-turning news stories to come down the grapevine in quite some time, a white English family from Lincolnshire have been convicted of—and I quote:
a series of modern slavery offences after forcing at least 18 victims - including homeless people and some with learning disabilities - to work for little or no pay and live in squalid conditions for up to 26 years.
The members of the Rooney family, who were based on Traveller sites in Lincoln, targeted vulnerable people, including some with alcohol or drug addiction, and deliberately looked for potential captives on the streets, Nottingham crown court heard.
For those of you not in the know, ‘Traveller’ is a shortened version of ‘Irish Travellers’, a term used to describe a traditionally itinerant ethnic group, primarily found in parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom, though the diaspora has spread to other regions too. The Traveller lifestyle and customs often do not align with those of their host communities and societies and as such they regularly face discrimination and violence—much like the Romani people across Europe.
In this particular case, the victims of those convicted were:
forced to work either on the Traveller sites or for the defendants’ businesses, repairing properties and paving driveways without safety equipment or appropriate clothing, the CPS said.
The defendants told their victims they owed money and would force them to work more to pay it off, paying them little or nothing for the work carried out.
The Rooney family would control their bank accounts, and in some cases would help themselves to their savings and benefits, even fraudulently instigating benefit claims in their names and seizing the money.
Some of the defendants supplied alcohol and drugs to the victims in an attempt to keep them under their control.
One of the victims was found to have been working for the family for 26 years.
In a nutshell: One sprawling white family actively and systematically preyed on a socially and economically vulnerable ethnic group, exploiting their labor, siphoning off their capital, and depriving them of freedom.
Between this, the increasing number of pedophile rings being uncovered in the halls of power, and the enforcement of a global neoliberal agenda that effectively enslaves the majority of the world, it’s becoming clear that the White Community really needs to take a good, long hard look at itself. The ‘few bad apples’ theory is looking more and more like a cheap excuse. It is obvious, to anyone who isn’t afraid to look with an unflinching gaze, that this kind of inexcusable and immoral criminality is endemic to the White Community. It is a deeply rooted evil that the community needs to actively address, and, further, must provide assurances to the public at large that something is being done. White People should organise marches in major cities around the globe. We expect to see banners denouncing predatory capitalism, modern day slavery, and Jake Paul before the weekend is out.
