Don’t Feel Bad For Lin-Manuel Miranda, Because Jay-Z Is Producing His Movie Musical

I think it’s a fair assumption to make that most of us here at Pajiba were rooting for Moana’s Lin-Manuel Miranda to win Best Song at the Oscars last night. Instead, “How Far I’ll Go” lost to La La Land’s “City Of Stars” by Justin Hurwitz, which is… you know, it’s fine. Honestly, the LLL crew has suffered enough at this point, I think. Let’s not make a whole thing out of it.

But while Miranda didn’t nail down that coveted EGOT just yet, there’s always next time — and when that happens, he might get to share the prize with Jay-Z.

On February 26 at the Weinstein Company’s pre-Oscars party, Harvey Weinstein announced that Jay-Z has signed on to be among the producers for In The Heights, the movie based on Miranda’s first Tony award-winning musical set in Washington Heights. It’s unclear when production is expected to start (Miranda’s, you know, kind of busy), but as previously reported by Variety, Libretto-writer Quiara Alegría Hudes will handle the screenplay, and John M. Chu has already been tapped to direct.

Odds are that Miranda won’t reprise his role as lead character Usnavi in the adaptation (he’s about ten years too old for the part at this point), but you can bet he’s gonna write a new track for that sucker, so it’ll be in the running for Best Song — and unlike most other songs written for movies of Broadway musicals (Hi Les Miserables, literally what was that weird Valjean number where he’s watching Cosette sleep??) it’ll be great.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Miranda’s also probably going to write a new song alongside Alan Menken for the live-action Disney adaptation The Little Mermaid. Either way, he’s comin’ back for that EGOT, and he’s going to be just as adorable and giddy the entire time. Really, it’s a win-win for all of us.
