Seeing people of all ages out in full force against the rich has been heartening. Older folks have been taking over town halls, yelling at politicians to reel in Elon Musk. Younger people have been gathering at Tesla dealerships, voicing their displeasure with… Elon Musk. Spend a few minutes on Bluesky and you will find people of all ages expressing their displeasure with, you guessed it, Jeff Bezos (but also Elon Musk). Everyone is sick and tired of rich people doing whatever they want and destroying the lives of the lower class and they are not being shy about it. I just wish they showed this energy when David Zaslav shelved Coyote vs ACME.
Zaslav took over Warner Brothers Discovery with an emphasis on cost-cutting. That took many forms, most of them being creatively void. He’s dusted off old franchises, attempting to make more money off things that were already making money and therefore avoiding creating anything new. The man has removed much of Warner Brothers’ animated catalog from its streaming service and networks despite the minuscule residuals being paid out for them. However, perhaps most egregiously, he’s shelved two completed films for tax write-offs.
One of the films was a Batgirl movie that included a Michael Keaton Batman performance which will never see the light of day (one of two such performances). The other was Coyote vs ACME, a film about the famed Looney Tunes character getting fed up and suing the ACME corporation for its failed products. He hires a lawyer played by Will Forte who would go toe-to-toe with an ACME rep played by John Cena. The picture would mix live action and animation in a way similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Zaslav killed it.
There were attempts to sell the film, but WBD’s asking price was too high. Regardless, people who saw the flick when it was privately screened to drum up interest praised it as funny and innovative. However, despite the response, the movie was not sold and presumably would never see the light of day. It was devastating news and felt like a bad omen about how the industry would be run going forward. Then some good news arrived suddenly like an anvil from the sky.
You likely haven’t seen much promotion for it, but there is an animated film currently in theaters called The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. It is the first full-length animated Looney Tunes feature to hit the big screen in decades and was similarly shelved by Warner Brothers. Then, it was purchased by Ketchup Entertainment who released it in theaters. Now, the company is aiming to purchase Coyote vs ACME and release it next year. The only way this news could be better is if Ketchup Entertainment was run by a ketchup-covered Tazmanian Devil behind a mahogany desk (as far as I know, that could be true).
Deadline claims the deal is not finished yet, but all signs point to it going through. It’s a miraculous turn of events that brought me genuine excitement. At a time when just opening a web browser can tighten my anxiety, I’ll take whatever good news I can get.
