Christopher Nolan, so far, has amassed an incredible cast for his forthcoming adaptation of The Odyssey: Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie, and Will Yun Lee, among others. He’s Christopher Nolan. He can basically cast whoever he wants.
He chose Matt Damon to play his lead, Odysseus, and the first image from The Odyssey has surfaced. I don’t know what I was expecting from Christopher Nolan — some sort of space The Odyssey or a contemporary The Odyssey set in London or something — but the last thing I was expecting, weirdly, is a conventional adaptation of Homer’s epic Greek poem.
I mean, if anyone can turn a homework assignment into an entertaining $250 million film with an outstanding cast, it’s Christopher Nolan. We will all watch it. We will all revere it. But in the back of my mind, I’m still gonna be hoping for a black hole to open up or an atomic bomb to go off. I also know that the number of teachers who are going to be able to take three days off to show this to their high school freshmen for years to come will make it all worth it.
The Odyssey follows the Greek champion Odysseus on his tumultuous journey home after the Trojan War. It will partially be filmed in Sicily. It opens on July 17, 2026.
