I won’t pretend I’ve ever been the biggest fan of Bridget Jones. But I know I’m in the minority on that. The original 2001 movie, Bridget Jones’s Diary, based on Helen Fielding’s novel made around $282 million worldwide against a budget of $25 million.
The law of diminishing returns being what they are, the subsequent sequels Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason (2004), and Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016) were not as well received.
But people liked them well enough that a fourth movie, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, was greenlit and will be released on Peacock in February of 2025. If that feels like the equivalent of “straight to video,” it’s because it is. This does not look good at all. Although I do applaud the creators for jumping on the older woman/younger man romance trend that emerged recently in films like The Idea Of You, A Family Affair, and Lonely Planet.
This one doesn’t look much better than any of those. It’s more of Bridget being Bridget, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to tread any new (or interesting) ground.
We’re not even getting Mr. Darcy in this one? What a rip-off.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy stars Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Leo Woodall, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, and Isla Fisher. It premieres on Peacock on February 13th, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
