Over the weekend, the Jon Hamm episode of SNL was supposed to promote his new show, Your Friends and Neighbors, but that plan rapidly fell to the wayside thanks to one very unfortunate choice in a parody of The White Lotus.
Cleverly titled “The White POTUS,” the sketch mocked the Trump administration by way of the hit HBO drama, but things went south when Sarah Sherman’s version of Aimee Lou Wood’s character appeared wearing overly exaggerated false teeth. It was not great, and a surprisingly cheap shot. And you know it was bad because SNL immediately apologized to Wood after she called out the sketch for being “mean and unfunny.” In a bizarre and perhaps telling twist, Walton Goggins loved the sketch, which really didn’t help the rumors that the two of them are secretly feuding. That’s not how you put that to bed.
Well, at least one part of that drama has been put to bed. In a classy move, Sherman sent Wood flowers, and she appreciated the gesture. Via Instagram:
It should go without saying that SNL punched way below the belt on this one. If you’re a White Lotus fan, then you know that in the days leading up to the sketch, Wood had opened up about how being self-conscious about her teeth made her feel too ugly for the show. There was no good time to pull this crap, but SNL managed to strike at the absolute worst time.
Look, I’m not going to rake anyone over the coals for bombing a joke. I do it every day! (What was I trying to say with that Bernie Coachella blurb last night? Biffed that one real good.) That said, how the hell did no one take a look at Sherman’s false teeth and pause for a second? The rest of the sketch was brilliant, and one bad choice flushed it right down the toilet. Been great for the drama mill though. Thanks, SNL!
