Dune: Prophecy on HBO at 9:00pm ET. This show features one of my least favorite sci-fi/fantasy trope; the wildly implausible timeline meant to show a strong sense of continuity which instead just causes more questions. This is supposed to be 10,000 years before the events of Dune and Dune 2: Dune It Again. Do you know what human civilization looked like 10,000 years ago? That pre-dates most artifacts of organized settlements outside of Jericho, but in the show there’s a pretty continuous social structure and family dynasties, as well as similar technology. Just say ‘ten generations’ or some slightly more nebulous phrasing and you don’t invite these problems.

Franchise on HBO at 10:05pm ET. First season finale. While this show is mostly making the easy jokes, last week’s episode did surprise me. I’m curious to see how they wrap up Daniel Brühl’s story without going to a very dark place.
