You Need This: Unlocking Neflix's Extensive Secret Category System

For you West Coasters, you know the wonder that is the iconic In-N-Out Burger. You also probably know about restaurant’s secret menu. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to customize your order— from Protein Style burgers to Animal Style fries— in a way that also makes you feel like you’re a member of a secret club.

There are other restaurants that have their own secret menus (order a “Monster Mac” at McDonalds if you feel like vomiting forever), but it turns out these hidden items go beyond fast food. Netflix of all things now also has the option for you to go off-menu.

If you’ve gotten bored with Netflix’s recommended categories— I feel like I’ve long-since exhausted the “Movies With a Strong Female Lead”— you can actually make your own. Netflix has thousands of customizable categories, accessible by replacing the x’s with a numeric code at the end of this Netflix URL:

http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX

And there are plenty of typical categories, the basic, usual stuff. For example, www.netflix.com/browse/genre/9434 will take you to Cult Comedies. 35800 will take you to “Steamy Romantic Comedies.” 4961 is dramas based on books.

You can see the entire list of categories here (though you have to be logged into your Netflix account to search them), but be warned, it’s a dangerous rabbit hole. If you’re the kind of person who’s curious to know if there are more shark movies or soccer movies, or more creature features or satanic stories out there, make sure you have some time blocked off before you pore over these links.
