There are a number of International series playing very well in America on Netflix these days, including the German series Dark (season two of which Tori will be covering this weekend), the futuristic thriller out of Brazil called 3%, which I’ve heard great things about; an Israeli series called Shtisel that my wife is obsessed with, and several others, including The Rain, a post-apocalyptic series out of Denmark.

I was an immense fan of the first season of Rain, set in a universe where the rain itself has killed most of the world’s population. It’s about a brother and sister — Simone (Alba August) and Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) — who essentially come of age inside a bunker forced to go out into the world after six years because their supplies have run out. Out in the world, they encounter some friends and some enemies, as they search for a cure for the virus that falls in the rain. Rasmus is somehow patient zero for the virus, as the family’s father inadvertently unleashed it while experimenting on a life-saving cure for his son.

It’s a gripping, addictive opening season, although it unravels in the lesser second season, as it turns its focus away from the search for a cure and onto the mutant-like powers the virus gives the Rasmus and the YA-like romantic relationships that blossom in the apocalypse. The series loses its mooring as it runs away from the original premise, but it also ends in a cliffhanger, one potentially with an eye toward returning to what made the first season so good.

Thankfully — at least of those of us who like closure — Netflix has officially renewed The Rain for a third and final season, as Netflix announced several days ago. Netflix has been ending a lot of shows lately after three seasons for financial reasons, and while that might also be the case here, a third season also feels like a good stopping point for The Rain.
