What's New, Noteworthy, and Not Worth Your Time on Netflix in April

It’s that time of the month again: the time when we look ahead to what we’ll be spending our hungover Sundays watching on Netflix. This month, Netflix gave us some handy categories for the releases, so as to separate the wheat from the crap more easily. And boy, is there a lot of crap this month. Here’s what you’ve got for options:

Netflix Originals
The contenders: A Madagascar spin-off, a special of that Ricky Gervais show no one liked, Daredevil, and a stand-up special from a comedian you’re probably not familiar with.
Choose: Daredevil, duh.

An Actiony/Comedy Hodgepodge of a Category
The contenders: Larry the Cable Guy Reenacts That Plotline From Arrested Development Where Buster Thinks He’s In Mexico, Wilfred, Jason Statham F*cks Sh*t Up, Biker Hamlet: Season 7
Choose: I’m embarrassed that I’ve never seen a minute of Wilfred, and I know I should choose that, but I’m also in the middle of a love affair with Statham due to his spending all of Spy trying to locate a “Face/Off Machine.” Still, probably, choose Elijah Wood.

The contenders: A bunch of crap. And one maybe not-crap.
Choose: I’ve never seen it, but Video Game High School has pretty good reviews online. And its premise of gamer celebrities brings to mind the movie The Wizard, which holds a special place in my childhood heart. So watch that. Or at least, please don’t watch any of those other options. Or maybe just track down a copy of The Wizard.

Another Stretch of a Category: New Frontiers
The contenders: 80s boredom, Not The Abyss, Not The Incredible Journey , Action Bible
Choose: Don’t be lured in by the promise of Lee Pace. Go with Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language, which got an incredible response out of Cannes last year.

The contenders: Starry Eyes, Jared Harris, What Are You Doing Here?, The Babadook, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Choose: Clear your schedule and double feature The Babadook and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

The contenders: Fran Drescher being Fran Drescher, Gillian Jacobs and Leighton Meester doing things, Hot Fuzzzzzzz!, An over-extended SNL sketch.
Choose: I’m going to assume you’ve all already seen Hot Fuzz and tell you then to see Life Partners. It’s delightful.

The contenders: Four movies from African filmmakers: October 1, Finding Mercy, Confusion Na Wa, and Onye Ozi,
Choose: I haven’t seen any of these, so if you have, let us know in the comments!

Here’s the full list of what’s new on Netflix streaming this month. (In the US, at least. Sorry, foreign friends.)
