Trailers You Missed: Even The Apocalypse Is Tolerable When David Tennant And Michael Sheen Are Around

No, you’re not dreaming, and despite Doctor Who returning last night (a FEMALE DOCTOR?! Who’da thunk it?!), you’re not caught in some timey-wimey shenanigans. It is in fact Monday, and this is in fact a trailer round-up. I’d like to say that this is intentional — that after the emotional wringer we all went through last week, I wanted to get this week started with some fun. But really, I’m just catching up on some of the footage that came out of New York Comic Con over the weekend. Either way, YOU’RE WELCOME

Good Omens — Coming To Amazon Prime sometime in 2019
Sure, Neil Gaiman has been teasing out set pics from his directorial debut for what feels like an ETERNITY ALREADY, but this is our first proper look at demonic David Tennant and angelic Michael Sheen in action. This miniseries, based on the novel Gaiman wrote with Terry Pratchett, is the streaming content equivalent of “too big to fail.” Like, this trailer isn’t even THAT good, all things considered. I’ve seen far more creative, exciting trailers. But really, it doesn’t have to be. It’s comprised almost entirely of footage featuring the aforementioned Tennant and Sheen, in silly costumes with a side of some heavenly hijinks, and that’s more than enough. We’re already facing the reality of likely irreparable global warming, with impacts we’ll see in our lifetimes, so pardon me while I indulge in a more entertaining apocalypse.

American Gods Season 2 — Returning to STARZ sometime in 2019
Speaking of Neil Gaiman novels, the big honking Ian McShane-starring adaptation of his OTHER book is coming back for a second round sometime next year. Well, we’re meant to think so, at any rate. Things behind the scenes are going so well: season one showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green left, and last month the news broke that their replacement, Jesse Alexander, had also been effectively sidelined before shooting for the second season had even finished. Conflicts over budget and creative direction between Fremantle and Starz seem to be poisoning the well, and it’s not really a, uh, GOOD OMEN of things to come. But, for what it’s worth, this trailer does look pretty spiffy. We get a little glowy-eyed Odin action, some hot Pablo Schreiber, and some creepy Crispin Glover. But mostly, we get a taste of the big meeting of the Old Gods. This season might be a disaster, but I’m still going along for the ride out of sheer curiosity at this point.

Aquaman — In theaters December 21
We mentioned this in PLove, but if you missed it — here’s that 5-minute extended look at DC’s next film, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard and yes, that’s Nicole Kidman too. It’s like a plot Big Gulp, only pretend that image has more to do with the ocean and less to do with 7-Elevens.

Daredevil Season 3 — Coming to Netflix October 19
So remember last week when I shared that trailer for the upcoming season, and pointed out that the dude in the Daredevil suit was very much NOT Matt Murdock, but instead was probably Bullseye? Yeah, so here’s a new trailer all about FBI Agent Poindexter, AKA Bullseye. He’s gonna f*ck shit up, you can already tell.

The Magicians Season 4 — Returns to SYFY on January 23rd
Look, season 3 was genuinely great television. And I’m hopeful that the show will keep its momentum up, considering the trailer for the upcoming season features office-wear Margo dropping f-bombs in front of a ram-god COVERED WITH KITTENS. Alarums, indeed!

She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power — Coming to Netflix November 16th
The latest trailer offers a better look at the plot and supporting characters, but the main takeaway is that this reboot continues to look charming AF.

And finally…

The Boys — Coming to Amazon Prime in 2019
This is a teaser for the comic book adaptation that’s almost too good to be true. Based on the ultra-violent series by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and artist Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan), The Boys follows a group of powerful vigilantes whose sole mission is to take down corrupt superheroes. Granted, you only catch a glimpse of the titular “Boys” at the very end — and yes, that IS Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, the ringleader. Otherwise, this is basically a promo for Vought, the corporation that fronts superhero teams like The Seven (think: Justice League, only naughtier). If the show sticks to the comics even a little bit, this is going to be one f*cking weird ride.

There were more trailers that came out, but honestly? These are the ones I care about. Let’s hope this week can at least not screw with my Good Omens high.
