Director and producer Ava DuVernay’s work with Netflix has been to the mutual benefit of both parties. DuVernay’s documentary 13th landed her an Oscar nomination and her distribution company ARRAY has released various titles via the streaming service, including the recent The Burial of Kojo. DuVernay has been candid in talking about how films she releases through Netflix are easily the most watched of her work, and that’s saying something for a director who made a $100m Disney film. Now, she’s bringing her miniseries When They See Us

DuVernay directs all four episodes, with Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro among its executive producers. Based on the true story of five teenagers of colour who were wrongly convicted of rape, the series will focus on the lives of the young men themselves, spanning 25 years from the incident itself to their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement they reached with the city of New York in 2014. The incredible ensemble includes Jharrel Jerome (young Kevin in Moonlight), Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Niecy Nash, Storm Reid from A Wrinkle in Time, Blair Underwood, Christopher Jackson, Aurora Perrineau, Felicity Huffman, and many more.

When They See Us will debut on Netflix on May 31st.
