If you thought Netflix’s Making a Murderer documentary about Steven Avery’s two trials and convictions was a head-scratching, heartbreaking hot mess, your head may be about to explode. This morning on The Today Show, filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos made a jaw-dropping announcement. Watch for yourself.

If for any reason you’re unable to watch the video right now, the gist of their statement is that a juror from the Avery trial contacted Ricciardi and Demos to say that he/she believes Steven Avery was not guilty, framed by law enforcement, and had voted to convict because of fear for his/her personal safety. Ricciardi told of a situation in the jury room described as “vote-trading; If you vote guilty on this count, I will vote not guilty on this count.’” The juror also stated that if Avery does receive a new trial, it should be held far away from Wisconsin.
I’m no lawyer, but I can’t imagine this information not leading to further investigation and a new trial. Then again, I couldn’t ever have imagined the events depicted in Making a Murderer, so…
