What's Streaming This Month? 'Black Mirror', 'The Handmaid's Tale', And The End Of A Netflix Era

The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and there’s plenty of excuses to stay outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. Like… yard work? Ugh. On second though, better just stay in and binge some shows instead!

Hulu
There’s no doubt that most people will be booting up their Hulu apps this month to check out the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale (June 5) — and if you need a refresher on where things stand in Gilead, here’s Hannah’s write-up of the season two finale. However, Hulu is today launching a weirdly appropriate bit of counter-programming in the form of Ask Dr. Ruth (June 1), a documentary about the life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who went on to become America’s premiere sex therapist.

Amazon Prime
Though Amazon chose to launch it’s long-anticipated Good Omens on the last day of May, it’s clearly banking on viewers clocking in to watch it throughout the month of June. So in terms of other original premieres, the month is somewhat lacking. The most noteworthy series is probably the second season of the Stana Katic drama Absentia (June 14), about an FBI agent who was presumed dead and also presumed to be a serial killer. And if the return of Luther on BBC America isn’t enough Idris Elba for you this month, you’ll be able to check out his directorial debut Yardie (June 17), a crime drama about a Jamaican drug runner who finds a lead on the man who murdered his brother while in London.

Netflix
As usual, Netflix has A LOT going on this month, as their originals are outpacing their library additions these days. Jessica Jones season 3 arrives on June 14 to wrap up the platform’s partnership with Marvel (here’s our spoiler-filled recap of season two if you need a reminder!) — though if you still want some superheroics, the incredible Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will be available to watch on June 26.

The thought-provoking and traumatizing sci-fi series Black Mirror is bringing a pile of fancy guest stars for its fifth season (June 5), including Hot Priest Andrew Scott, Miley Cyrus, and Anthony Mackie. And just in time for pride month there’s the long-awaited revival of the Tales of the City miniseries (June 7), which features original stars Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis as well as newcomers like Ellen Page. The story is a continuation that finds a middle-aged Mary Ann (Linney) returning home to San Francisco and getting drawn back into the orbit of the residents at 28 Barbary Lane.

But honestly, the show I’m most excited about is the second season of the moody, mind-bending, time-hopping German hit Dark (June 21), which I’d love to explain to you but IT’S REALLY COMPLICATED OK?
