Ava DuVernay and Netflix are reportedly working in partnership with Prince’s estate to create a documentary on the late singer’s life. The news was first reported by Variety on Monday night.

In an interview with Deadline, DuVernay said, “Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the sense. He was like no other. He shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”

This will be DuVernay’s eighth documentary. Her first, This is the Life was released in 2008. She followed it with Compton in C Minor in 2009. DuVernay challenged herself to capture Compton’s truth by filming everything she saw for two-hours. In 2010, far before Girls Trip would popularize the Essence Music Fest DuVernay filmed TV One Night Only: Live from the Essence Music Festival. My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop was released later that same year.

DuVernay also directed Serna VS, part of the Nine for IX, the ESPN Series in 2013. Three years later DuVernay released her next Documentary short “August 28th,” a reflection of the historic events in Black history that took place on this date including the lynching of Emmett Till, Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream Speech” and Barack Obama’s acceptance speech as the Democratic Nominee. Netflix and DuVernay teamed up once before for their award-winning documentary 13th.

No word on when the documentary will be available, though Variety has reported that the director has already been working for several months.
