If you aren’t old enough to have lived through the New Coke era, the flavor of the beverage can best be described as sickly sweet. Look: Soda is not even a particularly popular drink anymore because we’re all bougie fizzy water drinkers these days, which means that even regular Coke tastes sweeter than many of our taste buds can abide. New Coke takes that sweetness and doubles it, so it’s a little like drinking sugar with a side of soda. Or, all the flavor of Coke, with the sugar content of Mt. Dew (Fun Fact: My mother has worn dentures since she was around 40 because of Mt. Dew, which is how you know you’re a redneck (my brother also lost a lot of teeth when he was around 17, but that was more the meth than the Mt. Dew).

ANYWAY, because Coke really wants to earn some of that market share back, and because most streaming platforms eschew commercials, Coke has been induced into bringing that godawful drink from 1985 back as part of a promotion with Netflix’s Stranger Things. In the third season of the ’80s set series, New Coke will be weaved into select episodes, and Coca Cola will roll the product back on shelves so that people from 2019 can experience the awfulness that was New Coke, while those of us who were around back then can re-experience it, if only to remind us that it was as bad as we remember.

The New Coke will be available to order online, and Coca Cola has even remade an original New Coke ad with actors from Stranger Things, which it will roll out in movie theaters.

Reminder: New Coke only survived for 79 days before it was removed from shelves. This is a little like the beverage equivalent of “so-bad-it’s-good,” except that there is nothing good about New Coke.
