I wasn’t that intrigued by the premise I’d read for Will Arnett’s upcoming Netflix series, Flaked. It’s about “a self-help guru who needs a decent amount of help himself” and who endangers the relationship with his best friend over a woman. The idea of a Will Arnett self-help guru plays into every preconceived notion we have about Arnett’s boasting, exaggerated asshole characters.
Then again, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt didn’t sound that interesting in theory, either.
In practice — or at least in trailer form — Flaked feels like the kind of poignant, bittersweet dramedy that I’m bound to get sucked into, as Arnett’s character seems more sad-sack Bojack Horseman than larger-than-life Gob Bluth (though the series is exec produced by Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz). The appearance of Bobby from Sons of Anarchy seals it; I had no idea how much I missed him.
The series premieres on Netflix on March 11th.
