Netflix Wisely Snapped Up Jessica Jones' Bestie for Their New Science Fiction Thriller

Over the course of watching Jessica Jones, much of the after-conversations have understandably revolved around Jones, Kilgrave and Luke Cage, the first two because of their physical connection and the latter because of his mental one. For me, the series’ surprise standout was Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker, and not just because she was Jessica’s loyal guardian angel and best friend, but because of Taylor’s understated presence. In the face of real dangers from Kilgrave and Will Simpson, she relied (for now, at least) on an everyperson set of skills. Surrounded by people with superpowers, Trish’s determination to defend herself both mentally and physically was impressive; likewise was Taylor an undeniable presence in a room with those charismatic leads. Clearly, we’re not the only ones who noticed.

In collaboration with Orphan Black writer Tony Elliott, Netflix has announced Taylor will star alongside Robbie Amell (The Flash, The X-Files [miniseries]) in their original science fiction film, ARQ. Elliott will direct the post-apocalyptic thriller that finds the pair trapped in a house — and in a time loop — trying to protect what may be the only source of clean energy left in the world. Caught in that vicious cycle known in Bill Murray circles as Groundhog Day, Amell and Taylor are repeatedly attacked by a group of masked intruders; presumably they’ll Blunt/Cruise their way out of it at some point, lest we’ll all be stuck watching Netflix ‘till the end of days. Hey, wait a minute…

Now this kinda feels like a trick, but I guess if we’re stuck watching Rachael Taylor the rest of our days, things wouldn’t be so bad.

ARQ filming begins in Toronto soon, and if we’re lucky, we’ll get to see Taylor’s Trish Walker transition in Jessica Jones’ second season. Walker says she doesn’t want to count her eggs before they hatch, but she’d “ove to get my teeth stuck into whatever happens to the character.
