I generally liked Neil Gaiman’s six-part miniseries Good Omens, which premiered last month. I thought the kid who played the son of Satan wasn’t particularly great, and that the ending was a bit anti-climactic, but I really loved the relationship between David Tennant’s demon and Michael Sheen’s angel (though I disagree vehemently with those on social media who called it queerbaiting — there was nothing baity or ambiguous about it — they were straight-up in love, and the only reason they didn’t consummate their romance was because they are celestial beings).

Anyway, the best part of the series, I thought, was the half-hour cold open in the third episode, which gave us the backstory on Crowley and Aziraphale throughout time. There’s a scene where Noah is loading up all the animals on the Ark, and the demon Crowley is asking the angel Aziraphale what’s going on, and Aziraphale is like, “Well, God is going to put Noah and his family on this Ark and he’s going to kill everyone else,” and Crowley is like, “Wait! What? God is going to drown thousands of women and children? That’s brutal.” That’s the theme of that cold open, and much of Good Omens, really: God’s “ineffable plan” is kind of f**ked up. Crowley the demon doesn’t seem like such a bad guy, he just kind of fell into his lot by mistake, and maybe the anti-Christ wouldn’t be such an asshole if God wasn’t always trying to push this war on him.

Anyway, that’s what the Christian group Return to Order is taking issue with in Good Omens. They feel that the miniseries is normalizing Satanism, and they take issue with a number of elements in the series, specifically the way it “portrays the agents of Good and Evil as fighters in an arbitrary struggle devoid of meaning and truth.” Also, they don’t believe an angel and demon should be friends, that God should not be voiced by a woman (Frances McDormand), and that the show is a denial of Good and Evil. “This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection.”

Their petition to have the show canceled has generated over 20,000 signatures. There’s just one problem (aside from the fact that it’s a limited series that won’t be renewed), and that’s this: Return to Order is asking Netflix to cancel the series.

Good Omens airs on Amazon Prime.

Ooops.

In the meantime, again on the issue of whether Crowley and Aziraphale are in love, HELL YES THEY ARE, and if you don’t like that teenagers are reveling in that, you can go screw:
